Since 24 July 2026, most goods from India, including leather goods and footwear, have faced an additional 10% US tariff under Section 301. It is charged on top of the product's normal duty rate under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), which varies by material and construction. A small number of product codes are exempt, so ask your customs broker whether yours is one of them.
This replaced earlier measures. In February 2026, the US and India announced a framework for an interim trade agreement with an 18% reciprocal rate on select goods, including leather and footwear, down from a combined 50%. Later that month, the US Supreme Court ruled that the law used for those reciprocal tariffs (IEEPA) does not authorize tariffs, and their collection stopped on 24 February 2026. A temporary 10% surcharge on most imports then applied under Section 122 until 24 July 2026.
Illustrative example only: on a jacket with a customs value of $60, the additional 10% duty would be $6. The jacket's normal HTS duty is added on top and depends on its HTS code. A licensed customs broker will confirm the exact duty for your products.
Important: The Section 301 duty is being challenged at the US Court of International Trade, and a final US–India trade agreement had not been published at the time of writing. US tariff policy can change at short notice. Check the current position before every costing and purchase order, and confirm duty with a licensed customs broker. A useful quote shows where AFIL's price stops and your costs begin, which the Incoterm (shipping term) defines. The three most common are:
| Term | What the price includes | What you arrange and pay | Who carries tariff risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| FOB (Free On Board) | Goods made, packed and loaded on the vessel at the Indian port | Ocean freight, insurance, US customs clearance, duty and tariffs, inland delivery | You |
| CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) | FOB plus ocean freight and insurance to the US port | US customs clearance, duty and tariffs, inland delivery | You |
| DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) | Everything to your door, including US duty and tariffs | Receiving the goods | The seller, so DDP prices include a margin for tariff changes |

FOB pricing covers the goods loaded on the vessel in India, and the buyer pays freight, US duty and tariffs. DDP pricing covers delivery to the buyer's door with duty paid, so the seller carries the tariff risk. DDP is simpler to budget, while FOB usually gives the buyer more control over freight and duty.
