Bag leathers by grade and finish

The leather sets the look, weight and price of a bag. We help you match grade and finish to the silhouette and your retail price.

Chrome-tanned leather gives the widest colour range and a softer hand; vegetable-tanned leather holds structure and ages well. If you need chrome-free (wet-white) leather, tell us at the brief stage. For a plain-English guide to grades, read full-grain vs top-grain vs genuine leather.

How bag production works at AFIL

  1. Brief and tech pack. Share sketches, a tech pack or a reference bag, plus target price, quantities and delivery date.
  2. Materials and hardware. We propose leathers, linings and hardware; you approve colours and swatches.
  3. Prototype and sampling. Our pattern makers build the first prototype, then refine proportions, handle drop and pockets with you.
  4. Pre-production approval. You sign off a final sample. It becomes the sealed reference for bulk.
  5. Bulk production and shipment. Cutting, skiving, stitching, edge finishing, inspection and packing to your labels.

Full details are in how we work, from brief to shipment.

Quality checks on every bag

  • Incoming leather: thickness, colour against the approved standard and surface defects, checked before cutting.
  • Cutting: panels matched for grain and shade so the front, back and gussets of one bag look alike.
  • Stitching: stitch density, straight seam lines and secure reinforcement at handle and strap stress points.
  • Hardware and function: zips, magnets, clasps and strap attachments checked for smooth action and strength.
  • Edges and finish: even edge paint or burnish, no glue marks, clean linings.
  • Final inspection: dimensions, appearance and packing checked against the approved sample.

Who we make bags for

  • Fashion brands adding bags to apparel or footwear lines
  • Retailers and department stores building private label accessory ranges
  • Boutique and direct-to-consumer labels launching a first bag line
  • Importers and distributors supplying their own markets in North America, the UK and Europe

Many buyers add matching belts and small leather goods from the same factory to keep colours consistent.

Leather bag manufacturer FAQs

What is the minimum order quantity for private label leather bags?

MOQ depends on the style, the leather and the hardware. Simple styles in stock colours allow lower quantities than custom-dyed leather or hardware.

Can AFIL develop a bag from a sketch?

Yes. Our team turns sketches or reference images into patterns and prototypes, then refines them with you. A detailed tech pack speeds things up, but it is not required to start.

Which leather is best for a structured bag?

Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather or a firm top-grain leather holds shape best. We add internal reinforcement where the design needs it. Soft nappa suits slouchy shapes rather than structured ones.

Can you put our logo on the bag and the hardware?

Yes. We offer logo embossing, debossing and heat stamping on leather, plus custom logo plates, engraved hardware, branded linings, labels and packaging.

How long do bag sampling and production take?

Timing depends on design complexity, leather availability and order size. We confirm a production schedule once the pre-production sample is approved.

Do you make bags in leather alternatives?

Yes. Alongside responsibly sourced leathers we work with eco-conscious alternatives such as PU and recycled materials. Tell us your target price and we will recommend options.

Can AFIL ship bags to the UK and the US?

Yes. We supply buyers in the US, UK, Canada, Europe and India. Under the India-UK trade agreement in force since July 2026, qualifying leather goods with proof of origin can enter the UK duty-free; US duties on Indian leather goods currently follow the 2026 interim framework. Always confirm your exact duty with a customs broker.
